Rules for Impromptu Casting for D&D 5th Edition

This week, I present some fairly light rules for allowing casters to use spells they don't have prepared.

Any experienced caster will at some point have came across a situation where you just don't have the right spells prepared. Whether you're tumbling out of an airship without feather fall or up against an iron golem with only fire damage available, these situations can spell major trouble. These rules allow casters to ready spells on the fly, with certain drawbacks. Readying an unprepared spell takes an action, reducing the effectiveness of this strategy in combat. Also, lacking the proper preparation can cause your control of the arcane energies you wield to slip disastrously.

I had the idea for something like this quite a while ago. I was initially inspired by this post on Logan Knight's blog, Last Gasp. Logan's rules are designed with a specific setting in mind, so I tried to create something that was more "standard 5th edition". Let me know if you think the mishaps are too punishing (or not punishing enough), and if you can think of any absolutely game-breaking plays enabled by these rules, I'd be really interested to see what you come up with.

The document on GM Binder: Impromptu Casting

Okay thats it this week. Sorry it's not more substantial. As I mentioned on my twitter (@DillTheHerb), getting back into doing homebrew has been kinda difficult. I'm trying my best to not let it feel like work but it definitely can feel that way on the whole formatting side. Ah well, everything gets easier with practice I guess. Oh also let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions for new posts, especially if its something relating to the modern conversion. Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you next time.
