Rough Rules for Oversized Weapons and an Announcement

This week, I present some rules for wielding weapons you're not supposed to, and an announcement about my next Big Project.

Has a player ever wanted to use a weapon designed for a creature larger than them? Of course they have. And why wouldn't that giant the party just defeated be carrying a massive dagger?

These situations can present a bit of a challenge to a Game Master - just what statistics should they use? The 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide gives a bit of a hint: on page 278, when looking at the damage output of a homebrew monster.

"Big monsters normally wield oversized weapons that deal extra dice of damage on a hit. Double the weapon dice if the creature is Large, triple the weapon dice if it's Huge, and quadruple the weapon dice if it's Gargantuan."

"A creature has disadvantage on attack rolls with a weapon that is sized for a larger attacker. You can rule that a weapon sized for an attacker two or more sizes larger is too big for the creature to use at all."

Not exactly the most fleshed-out rules, but it's certainly a start. I set about expanding these rules into a whole system which doesn't change any of the current weapons and shouldn't affect any creatures wielding weapons designed for them. The result is quite robust, if a little bit rough around the edges and fiddly in parts.

Now onto the announcement. The next big project I'm undertaking is a conversion of d20 Modern rules and features into D&D 5th Edition. If you follow the Unearthed Arcana subreddit, you may have already seen some early drafts related to this project, and I'm very excited to be getting into another big task.

I'm probably going to release parts of this conversion at a time, interspersed with mini projects like this week, with a final Modern Manual released when everything is complete. Throughout this time, I'll be putting draft work out on the Unearthed Arcana subreddit as and when they're made.
